Placement in English, math, foreign language, and chemistry courses is determined using multiple measures. Students may be required to complete a placement test or a summer workshop prior to taking a placement test.
English General Education Requirement
- All students are required to complete ENGL 101: Critical Thinking and Writing and ENGL 102: Research Writing.
- Successful completion of ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 or the equivalent with a grade of C or better in the course is required for graduation from 91¿ì»îÁÖ. Courses not completed with a grade of C or better must be repeated the next semester.
- Typically, transfer credit will be accepted as satisfying the ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 core requirement only if that credit was earned before the student first attended 91¿ì»îÁÖ.
- Students are expected to enroll in ENGL 101 during their first semester and ENGL 102 during their second semester at the University and every following semester until they meet the core requirement. Failure to satisfy this English requirement during the student's first 60 credit hours or first four semesters at the University may prevent students from registering for future semesters.
Mathematics General Education Requirement
- All incoming undergraduate students without acceptable transfer credit must complete a minimum of 3 semester hours of college-level mathematics. Specific academic programs may require the completion of additional math coursework.
- All graduate and undergraduate students must complete math course prerequisites. Prerequisite completion may be demonstrated by placement or transfer credit.
Chemistry Requirement
Students must place into a college-level math class in order to enroll in CHEM 111: General Chemistry I or CHEM 109: General, Organic and Bio-Chemistry Survey.
COMM 101 General Education Requirement
- Students are expected to enroll in COMM 101: Speech Fundamentals during their first year at the University.
- Successful completion of COMM 101 or the equivalent with a grade of C or better is required for graduation from 91¿ì»îÁÖ.
- Normally, transfer credit will be accepted as satisfying the COMM 101 General Education requirement only if that credit was earned before the student first attended Saint Xavier University.
- Students expecting to qualify for state teaching certificates are required to have 3 credit hours of speech.
Academic Support Requirement
Newly admitted undergraduate students are expected to complete the following University requirement during the first semester of attendance in one of the two ways that follow:
- TS 100: Transitions is a 1 credit-hour seminar required of all students entering 91¿ì»îÁÖ with 29 credit hours or less. Students must complete Transitions in the first semester of attendance. The curriculum is an extended orientation that includes an introduction into the 91¿ì»îÁÖ mission and core values, development of an appreciation of the broader culture of a university education, diversity, academic support services and strategies and the use of technology.
- ACSU 101: Transfer Student Orientation Online Transfer ROAR, is an optional course designed to support transfer students in their transition to 91¿ì»îÁÖ. The course introduces students to the University's identity, key campus resources, and the offices and departments available to support their academic and personal success. It is intended especially for transfer students who are unable to attend an in-person ROAR session, regardless of the number of transfer credit hours they bring to the institution. The course is not a graduation requirement.
